wasn't a ballplayer but someone who is just as important...his nickname says it all, "The Sultan of Sod"...he was the famous groundskeeper in Kansas City, first with the Kansas City Athletics and then with the Kansas City Royals. He prepared the field for the first Super Bowl in 1967 and has worked every one since. He is also in a lot of Halls of Fame, check out his business card.
I have always been sending TTMs to players only but when I saw someone on SCN receive a success from Mr Toma, I checked to see if I had any images of Mr Toma and sure enough I had an image of him with the famous ball rabbit at Municipal Stadium in Kansas City.

Steve Blass
was probably the best Pirates pitcher of the late 60s, early70s. In 1968, he won 18 games with 7 shutouts and in the 1971 World Series, he pitched two complete games, both wins including Game 7 and he came in second to Roberto Clemente in World Series MVP voting.
He originally signed with the Giants in 1959 and played in their system until 1963, when he signed with the Cardinals and played in their system until he was drafted by the Expos as the 54th pick in the 1968 expansion draft.

You may notice I'm on a "Greatest Moments" kick lately, I really like the design but I feel they look better with color images instead of the original style B&W.

Al Weis
was a utility infielder with the Chicago White Sox and New York Mets in the 1960s but is most famous for his play in the 1969 World Series. He drove in the game winning run with a single in the ninth inning in Game Two and hit a game tying home run in the seventh inning of Game 5 as the Mets won the Series. He was named the winner of the 1969 Babe Ruth Award as the player with the best performance in the post season.

J.C. Martin
also was a member of the 1969 Mets. He originally started in the White Sox organization as a first and third baseman but was converted to catcher in 1962. In 1965, he set a major league record for passed balls with 33 mostly because he was catching knuckle ball pitchers Hoyt Wilhelm and Eddie Fisher. He was sent to the Mets in 1967 as the "player to be named later" in the Ken Boyer trade to the White Sox. he was a back up with Duffy Dyer for regular catcher Jerry Grote and was involved in the famous bunt play in Game Four of the 1969 World Series. With the game tied 1–1 in the bottom of the 10th and Rod Gaspar on second, Martin was pinch-hitting for Tom Seaver, he bunted the ball back to the mound and, while running to first, was hit on the arm by Pete Richert's throw, allowing Gaspar to score the winning run from second. The Orioles said he was running inside of the baseline and should have been out.
As anyone who has sent him a TTM request would agree, he was a gracious signer and was great to collectors. That was how I came to know him, through a TTM request in 2008. We corresponded through the years as I made him many custom cards, the last of which came back signed the week he passed. Over the last few years, I was involved with Ray and Keith Olbermann as Ray was tracking down former teammates and opponents. Ray would find them, we'd make the cards for them.

I think Keith summed everything up......

Ron Hansen
played shortstop for the Orioles, White Sox, Senators, Yankees and Royals from the late 50s until the early 70s. He was the American League Rookie of the Year with the Orioles in 1960 and I would say was one of the best fielding shortstops of the 1960s. He led the AL in assists, putouts and DPs several times.
Bob Johnson
was originally signed by the Mets in 1964 and made his major league debut with the 1969 Mets, pitching in 2 games, though he spent most of the 1969 season in the minors with Memphis and Tidewater. He was traded to the Kansas City Royals in the 1969 off season with Amos Otis for Joe Foy. He was then traded to the Pirates during the 1970 off season and started 27 games for the 1971 Pirates with a 9-10 record. He beat the Giants in the NL Playoffs but lost one game to the Baltimore Orioles in the 1971 World Series.
I was saddened to read last week that another American ballplayer who played in Japan in the 1960s had passed away on October 15, 2018....

Joe Stanka
played in Japan from 1960 to 1966 with the Nankai Hawks and Taiyo Whales. He began his baseball career with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization in 1950. He made the major leagues with the Chicago White Sox in 1959, pitching in two games. His best season in Japan was in 1964, he won 26 games to receive the league MVP award. He pitched shutouts in Games 1, 6, and 7 of the Japan Series against the Hanshin Tigers to win the Japan Series MVP award as well.

I mailed these customs to Mr Stanka last year, he signed them and included two of his own cards.

Glenn Mickens
pitched in 4 games ( starting 2) for the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers going 0-1. He stayed in the Dodgers organization until 1958 when in 1959, he went to play ball in Japan with the Kintetsu Buffaloes. Mr Mickens won 45 games over 5 seasons, was named to 3 All Star teams and was the first American to win an All Star game. He played in Japan until 1963. After returning to the States, he was an assistant coach for UCLA from 1964 to 1989.

Gene Bacque
was signed by the Detroit Tigers in 1957 and played in their organization until 1960, when he was released. Playing semi pro baseball, he was signed by the Hanshin Tigers in 1962. In 1964, Mr Bacque had a monster season....winning 29 games while losing only 9, striking out 200 batters and pitching 353 innings, unheard of these days. He won the Sawamura Award, the equivalent of the Cy Young Award and the Tigers won the pennant.

Chico Vaughns
He started in the Kansas City Athletics organization in 1966, then the Seattle Pilots / Milwaukee Brewers and then finished with the Phillies and the Mexican League in 1974. He now lives in California. Ray said he hadn't talked to Mr Vaughns since 1970.

Ray got in touch with David's brother, Kenneth, from info supplied by Chico Vaughns, as David has health issues these days. Mr Vaughns and Mr Lindsay grew up together in Los Angeles.

"Ray Peters": It was quite enlightening to hear David talk about all the MLB players that he and Chico grew up playing ball with in Watts.!

Jesse Huggins
passed away last year on May 31, 2017. He started his career with the San Francisco Giants organization in 1965. In 1966 with the Decatur Commodores, he was 12-11 with 199 strikeouts. A Vietnam veteran, Mr Huggins was out of baseball in 1967 and 1968. He returned to the Giants in 1969. His contract was purchased by the Seattle Pilots. Ray and Mr Huggins were teammates with the 1970 Portland Beavers and 1970 Jacksonville Suns. His given name is really Jessie not Jesse.

Ray found his obituary and tracked down and contacted his wife. She said that they have a 14 year old grandson and that he is a pitcher like his Grandfather.
But since I retired in June after 40 years with the U.S.P.S., I should be posting a little more
frequently......I hope.

These are customs I made for some private signings

Bobby Sheehan
was signing autographs at Doug Keatings's BB card show on June 17, 2018. I highly recommend Doug for his signings...he always has interesting Boston area former players at his shows.

I remember Mr Sheehan was one of the star players with the NY Raiders of the WHA, along with Ron Ward. He then bounced around to several teams and then he showed up in the 1978 NHL Playoffs with the NY Rangers during their Stanley Cup run and was outstanding.

Freddie Velazquez
was a catcher on the 1969 Seattle Pilots and has been a tough signature since he lives in the Dominican Republic. On SCN, Noel Arcenay and his friend Miguel have frequent signings with Dominican players and this past spring had Fred Velazquez on their list. This could be the only opportunity to get him so I had to jump on this signing.

Freddie started his career in 1958 with the SF Giants organization, played in the Kansas City Athletics organization through the 1960s and made the majors with the expansion Seattle Pilots in 1969. He moved to the Atlanta Braves and played with them in 1973.

Bob Reynolds
pitched for 7 major league teams in 6 seasons but only had his own card as an Oriole in 1974 and 1975. Bob was obtained through a signing with Britt of Autographsink.

Fred "The Hammer" Williamson
was a hard hitting defensive back in the 1960s American Football League with the Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs. He later became a movie actor and co-starred in the original MASH movie.

Mr Williamson was obtained by Lou from Signatures4U along with the Steelers in the next post.
I originally sent to Keith Erickson, former UCLA, Bulls, Lakers and Suns basketball player back in 2014 but since wrote it off as a failure after not getting a return. I then got a letter last month from Mr Erickson apologizing for losing my customs after showing them to his wife. He said to make up another set for him and he would sign whatever I needed.
