July 30, 2012 Five Back Today

Today was a good day as I got five returns......

Ted Savage

Ted played in the major leagues for almost 10 years mainly as a backup outfielder with the Phillies, Pirates, Cardinals, Cubs, Dodgers, Reds, Brewers and Royals.

Bob Saverine

Bob played with the Orioles and Senators from 1962 -1967. He signed 3 of the 4 customs I sent.

Art Kusnyer

Art was the catcher when Nolan Ryan threw his second no-hitter. He later spent 19 years as bullpen coach for the White Sox.

Dalton Jones

Mr Jones played with the Boston Red Sox from 1964-1969 and led the American League in pinch hits with 17 in 1967, the year the Red Sox went to the World Series.

Tom Parsons

Tom played with the Pirates in 1963 and the Mets in 1964-65.

Dave Eilers

Dave Eilers pitched with the Braves, Mets and Astros from 1964-1967. His best years was with the Astros in 1967 when he went 6-4 in 35 games.

July 27, 2012 Bob Locker

Bob Locker

Mr Locker was one of the most reliable relief pitches of the 1960s 70s. He led the American League with 77 appearances in 1967 and was second in the AL in saves with 20, when it was harder to get a save. He pitched in 576 games for his career and never started a game.

July 26, 2012 Three Back

Got three returns today.....

Larry Brown

Larry Brown was the regular Cleveland Indians shortstop from 1964-1969. He was purchased by the Oakland A's in 1971.

Steve Shea

Steve pitched with the Houston Astros in 1968 and went 4-4 in 30 games. He was sold to the Montreal Expos in April 1969 and pitched in 10 games.

Joe Shipley

Joe started in the New York Giants organization 1954 and pitched for the Giants from 1958-1960 going 0-0 in 26 appearances. He pitched in 3 games for the 1963 Chicago White Sox, going 0-1.

Jerry Casale

Jerry pitched for the Red Sox, Angels and Tigers from 1958-1962. His best year was with the Red Sox in 1959 when he went 13-8. After he retired, he opened a restaurant in NYC.

Julio Navarro

Julio started in the Giants organization and was purchased by the Angels in 1962. He had a really good 1963 season appearing in 57 games with 12 saves. He was traded to the Tigers in 1964.

July 23, 2012 Another Big Return Day

Got another 8 returns today.....

Howie Bedell

Howie played for the 1962 Braves and the 1968 Phillies. In 1968 with the Phillies, Howie hit a sac fly that broke Drysdale’s string of 58 consecutive scoreless innings.  He also had a 43 game hitting streak in the American Association in 1962 which is the league record. Howie added his own 2 cards with the return.

George Culver

George Culver threw a no-hitter against the Phillies in 1968 as a player with the Cincinnati Reds. He also played with the Indians, Cardinals, Astros, Dodgers and Phillies.

Larry Gowell 

Larry pitched in 2 games for the 1972 Yankees. In his last start, in the last game of the 1972 season against the Brewers, Larry hit a double thus becoming the last American League pitcher to get a hit in a regular season game before the Designated Hitter went into effect the next year.


 Jackie Warner

Mr Warner played with the 1966 California Angels

Tom Bradley

Tom played in the majors from 1969-1975 with the Angels, White Sox and Giants. He had 3 good years (1971-73) when he won 43 games in those 3 seasons.

Bob Montgomery

Bob was the back up catcher, to Carlton Fisk, for the Red Sox throughout the 1970s.

Pat Cristelli

Pat Cristelli never pitched in the major leagues but he was a 1974 Second Round draft pick for the California Angels. He pitched well in the Angels farm system (averaging 11 wins a year) until 1978

Doug Clemens

Doug played from 1960-1968 with the Cardinals, Phillies and Cubs

July 21, 2012 Big Returns Day

Bob Humphreys

Bob was a pitcher with the Tigers, Cardinals and Brewers but had his best seasons with the Washington Senators from 1966-1969. The Senators Bullpen was previously signed by Dick Lines and now its off to Dave Baldwin.

Gary Timberlake

Gary pitched in 2 games with the 1969 Seattle Pilots. He was originally drafted by the NY Yankees in 1966 Draft. He finished 1971- 1975 in the Oakland A's organization.

Bill Virdon

Bill Virdon was Rookie Of The Year in 1955 with the Cardinals and was traded to the Pirates where he played from 1956-1968 and then he manged the team from 1972-1973. He managed the Yankees in 1974-75 and was replaced by Billy Martin.

John Miller

John played with the 1966 Yankees and hit a home run in his first major league at bat.He last played with the 1969 Dodgers.

Ray Corbin

Ray was mainly a starting pitcher with the Twins from 1971-1975 going 36-38

Bill Stein

Bill came up with the Cardinals in 1972 but spent most of his career with the Chicago White Sox, Seattle Mariners and the Texas Rangers. He emailed asking foe copies of the Cardinals cards.

Billy Moran

Played with the Cleveland Indians and the Los Angeles Angels and was on the 1962 American League All Star team representing the Angels.

Floyd Wicker

Floyd played with the Cardianls, Expos, Brewers and Giants from 1968-1971. All the photos I used were black and white photos that I colorized.

Nate Oliver

Nate was an infielder for the Dodgers in the 1960s. He later went to the Cubs and Yankees.

Joe Moeller

Joe spent his entire career with the Dodgers from 1962-1971. He made occasional trips to the minor leagues in that time and I made some custom cards of him with the Omaha Dodgers and the Spokane Indians.


 Dick Estelle

Dick was signed by the SF Giants in 1960 and made the major leagues with the Giants in 1964-65 and had a career record of 1-2. The two photos of Dick with the Giants were originally black and white and I added color to them.

July 18, 2012 Two Returns Today

Got back two returns today, one from last month and one from a batch of letters I mailed on Saturday.

Tom Qualters

Tom Qualters was a "Bonus Baby" who signed with the Philadelphia Phillies out of high school in 1953, so that meant he had to remain on the Phillies roster for 2 years. He pitched in one game in 1953 and gave up 6 earned runs in a third of an inning and ended up the season with a 162.00 ERA. He last played in the majors with the White Sox in 1958.

Mel Nelson

This was a return that shocked the hell out of me. I mailed this request with a bunch of others on Saturday, July 14th. I got a reply today on July 18th. Five days from Brooklyn, NY to California and back to me........Thank you Mel and thank you United States Postal Service.

Rene Lachemann

Rene Lachemann played with the Kansas City Athletics in 1965 and part of 1966. His brother Marcel also played for the A's from 1969-1971. Rene was also the  manager of the Seattle Mariners from 1981-1983, the Brewers in 1984 and the Florida Marlins from 1993-1996.
