Jay started his career with the Cincinnati Reds in 1957 and was later taken by the New York Mets in the 1961 Expansion Draft. After losing their first nine games, Mr Hook won the first game in NY Mets history beating the Pirates 9-1 in Pittsburgh in April 1962.
